The process of changing the name of Bhopal’s Barkatullah University has gone one step further. The Executive Council (EC) of the university approved the proposal to name the institute as Vagdevi Bhojpal University. Now this proposal has been sent to the Governor and Chancellor Mangubhai Patel for final approval. The argument put forward in the meeting was that Raja Bhoj is a symbol of the historical, cultural and intellectual heritage of the state. On this basis, a proposal was made to link the university in his name, which was approved by the EC.
Not only the name change, changes are also proposed in the academic structure of the university. Traditional subjects like Arabic and Persian will be reorganized as the Department of Comparative Languages and Culture.
Who was Barkatullah?
The present name of the university was named after the freedom fighter and revolutionary thinker Maulana Barkatullah Bhopali. Born in Bhopal, Barkatullah had strengthened the freedom fight at the international level against British rule. He was also associated with the temporary government in exile of India formed in 1915 and is counted among the leading revolutionaries of the country.
What is the further process?
Changing the name of a government university is not possible merely by announcement. First the proposal is passed in the Executive Council. After this the proposal is sent to the Higher Education Department, State Government and finally to the Chancellor for approval. If necessary, the process of amending the University Act is also adopted. The new name will be officially implemented only after approval.
