Chandranath Rath, PA of BJP leader Shubhendu Adhikari, was murdered on the night of 6 May during the assembly elections in West Bengal. Five days after the murder, a special team of Bengal Police arrested a person named Raj Singh from Uttar Pradesh. Police believed that Raj Singh was involved in this murder. But his arrest was wrong. The court ordered his release.
CBI had filed a petition demanding the release of Raj. CBI had said in its petition that Bengal Police has arrested the wrong person. The court accepted the petition of CBI and ordered the release of Raj Singh. Actually, Bengal Police had arrested Raj Singh along with Mayank Mishra and Vicky Maurya that day (11 May).
Evidence of Raj being in UP at the time of murder
However, the court later handed over the investigation of this case from the state police to the CBI. When the CBI investigated closely, it came to light that the Bengal Police had arrested the wrong person. CBI came to know that Raj Singh was not present on the day Chandranath Rath was murdered and he has evidence of his innocence. Raj’s family members also said the same thing.
In this whole matter, Raj Singh’s family said that when Chandranath Rath was shot dead, Raj was in Uttar Pradesh. Raj’s mother Jamwanti Singh, while talking to the media after his arrest, said that her son had gone to Lucknow with her on May 7 to attend the wedding of MLC Pappu Singh’s daughter. They stayed in a guest house near the wedding venue.
Raj was arrested from Ayodhya
He further said that Raj returned to the guest house at midnight after attending the wedding ceremony. After this he left with us for Ambedkar Nagar the next morning. Raj’s mother also told that she visited the temple of Makhdoom Ashraf Baba in Ambedkar Nagar. Here he offered a sheet and then left for Ayodhya. We stopped at Ayodhya for darshan and later stopped at a place to have food. When we were leaving from there, the police stopped us and took Raj with them.
CBI is investigating this matter
It is also being told that Raj Singh has a good hold in the political circles of Uttar Pradesh. His family contacted many high level officials of the state demanding justice. According to sources, the Intelligence Branch and Special Task Force of UP Police have found the family’s claim to be true. Chandranath was murdered two days after the results of the Bengal Assembly elections were declared and three days before the swearing-in of Shubhendu. In this case, CBI has recently arrested Rajkumar Singh from Ballia and Vinay Rai alias Pampam from Varanasi.
