CBT vs paper… Parliamentary committee meeting emphasizes on exam reform

June 1, 2026 by Uma Shankar

An important meeting of the parliamentary committee related to the Education Ministry was held on Monday. This meeting was presided over by Congress leader and committee chairman Digvijay Singh. Secretary of School Education and Higher Education, Secretary of Health Ministry, Director General of NTA and representatives of United Doctors Front attended the meeting. The main topic of discussion in the meeting was ‘pen and paper based examination’ versus ‘computer based examination’ (CBT). The most surprising thing was that during the meeting, Congress leader Digvijay Singh praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He said, “We trust and believe in our Prime Minister. We also have full faith in our system that no injustice will be done to the students.” Before the start of the meeting there was an informal discussion among all the members. During this, members of the ruling party asked Digvijay Singh why such meetings were being held amid the investigation and why the entire issue was being politicized.

On this, Digvijay Singh clarified, “There is no question of politics in this. This matter is related to the deep concern of hundreds of parents.” He also congratulated the ministry and officials for successfully conducting the re-examination of NEET to be held on June 21.

MPs raised these important issues

Exam Security: The members asked the officials what preparations are being made to make the examination completely leak-proof. Officials said that the help of in-house paper setters, teachers and professors is being taken so that there are no shortcomings.

confidence building: The members said that before June 21, special steps should be taken to restore confidence among the students. Some members suggested that the Prime Minister or the Education Minister issue an open letter to the students or send a message so that the students feel that they are not alone.

Preparing for the future: The members also said that preparations for the next year should be started from now. CBT (Computer Based Examination) Hackathon should be promoted and startups related to examination preparation should also be encouraged.

Coordination between Ministries: The committee suggested that the Health Ministry should cooperate extensively with the Education Ministry for the successful conduct of the examination.

Who were present in the meeting?

Ravi Shankar Prasad, Ghanshyam Tiwari, Bansuri Swaraj and Sambit Patra attended the meeting from the ruling party. On the opposition side, T. Sumathi of DMK, Rajiv Rai of Samajwadi Party and Dean Kuriakose of Congress were present.
