Case of obscene advertisements related to children: Meta-Instagram in trouble, government will take decision after getting the answer

July 9, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Information Technology Secretary S Krishnan said the government will wait for its formal response on the notice issued to Meta in the case of Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse Material (CSEAM) in paid advertisements on Instagram. Upon receiving the response from the company, further decisions will be taken on that basis. Let us remind you that the government had also sent a notice to Meta in this matter on Saturday. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology had directed Instagram to remove all advertisements and content promoting CSEAM and facilitating access.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had also asked the officials of the Ministry to seek answers from Meta regarding showing obscene advertisements related to children on Instagram. The ministry has sought clarification from Instagram on this matter. When the notice was issued on Saturday, Meta informed through a blog that the company has removed obscene content from its various platforms and efforts are on to deal with it.

The company recently described child abuse as a terrible crime through its blog and informed that the company is actively fighting this type of abuse on its platforms every day. When asked about the ministry’s stand at the CII GCC Business Summit, S Krishnan said, we will wait for the response to the notice issued and will decide our stand based on the response from Meta.

What is the matter?

The BBC report revealed something that shocked everyone and that was that Instagram was accused of showing some paid advertisements on the platform in which words like child video were used. There were some links along with the advertisement which were leading to Telegram where obscene content related to children was being openly sold for Rs 99.

In a recently published blog post, Meta explained that its ad review process involves both automated systems and team review to identify and remove ads that violate policies. However, the company also acknowledged that no system is capable of catching every breach.

The company says that last year, more than 40 lakh suspicious accounts and 3.6 crore content related to children have been removed across the world. In India, with the help of AI tools, action has also been taken against 1,60,000 accounts sharing suspicious links related to exploitation in the last 6 months.
