Can DigiLocker become an alternative to bank locker? Know what is the truth

June 18, 2026 by Uma Shankar

With the Digital India campaign, the use of DigiLocker has increased rapidly in the country. People have now started keeping documents like Aadhar Card, PAN Card, Driving License and educational certificates safe digitally. In such a situation, the question arises whether DigiLocker can become an alternative to bank locker? Experts say that both DigiLocker and Bank Locker have their own distinct roles and cannot completely replace each other.

What can be kept in DigiLocker?

DigiLocker is a digital platform of the Government of India, where citizens can keep digital copies of their important documents safe. Aadhaar, PAN, vehicle registration certificate, driving license and certificates issued by various educational institutions are made available on this platform. These documents can be accessed online from anywhere and many government and private institutions accept them as valid documents.

Why will the need for bank lockers continue?

According to experts, there are some documents whose original copy is very important to be kept safe. These include property papers, will, power of attorney, trust deed and other legal documents. In many cases, only the scanned copy is not sufficient and it is mandatory to submit the original document. Bank lockers still play an important role in keeping such documents safe.

Along with digital security, vigilance is also necessary

DigiLocker uses modern technologies like encryption and two-factor authentication for security. Despite this, risks such as phishing links, fake websites and email fraud by cyber criminals remain. Therefore, users should not share their login details and OTP with anyone.

What is the advice of experts?

Financial experts believe that the original copy of important documents should be kept in a bank locker or some safe place, while their digital copy should be saved in DigiLocker. This also maintains the security of the documents and they can be easily accessed when needed. That is, DigiLocker provides convenience, but does not completely eliminate the need for a bank locker.
