Buying a new laptop or PC? First understand what is the difference between CPU and GPU.

June 21, 2026 by Uma Shankar

While buying a computer, laptop or smartphone, the names of CPU and GPU are often heard. Both play an important role in the performance of the device, but their functions are different. While the CPU handles the general tasks of the entire system, the GPU processes graphics and heavy calculations faster. In such a situation, it becomes important to understand the difference between them before buying a new device. Let us understand about CPU and GPU…

Why is CPU called the brain of the computer?

CPU i.e. Central Processing Unit is considered to be the most important part of the computer. It works to run the operating system, open applications, manage files and process user instructions. When you browse the Internet, prepare a document or do simple calculations, all these tasks are handled by the CPU. It is designed in such a way that it can complete different types of work efficiently in less time.

How does the work of GPU differ from CPU?

GPU i.e. graphics processing unit is specially designed for graphics and performing large amounts of calculations simultaneously. It is used more in areas like video games, 3D graphics, video editing, animation and artificial intelligence. GPU has a large number of small cores, which can work on a lot of data simultaneously. This is why it proves to be more effective than CPU in tasks involving graphics and heavy data processing.

What is the biggest difference between the two?

CPU has a small number of but powerful cores, which can complete different types of tasks quickly. On the other hand, GPU has a large number of small cores, which are capable of performing thousands of similar tasks simultaneously. To understand in simple language, CPU is like an employee who can handle many types of work alone, whereas GPU is like a big team that can do the same type of work together on a very large scale.

Why is GPU important?

In today’s time, powerful GPU is considered very important for tasks like high graphics gaming, 4K video editing and 3D designing. The GPU rapidly produces visuals, effects and videos that appear on the screen. If the GPU is weak then there may be lag problem during gaming and video rendering may take more time. This is the reason why the demand for GPU is continuously increasing in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, because it is capable of processing big data fast.

Collaboration of both is necessary for better performance

High-tech computers and laptops require both CPU and GPU. The CPU handles general system functions, while the GPU performs graphics and specialized types of calculations faster. CPU may be sufficient for general use, but for gaming, video editing, designing and AI related work, it becomes necessary to have a good GPU. Both together improve the overall performance of the device and give a better experience to the user.
