The government has come on the backfoot in the matter of security arrangements for Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi. The government has now restored Z category security to both the leaders, which also includes bulletproof vehicles. This decision has been taken after political pressure. In fact, after the security cut for Lalu-Rabri, the Lalu family had withdrawn all its security. Lalu Yadav, Rabri Devi and Tejashwi Yadav are without any security for almost last two weeks. Lalu-Rabri were the first to withdraw all their security, after which RJD workers continued to provide security outside Rabri’s residence.
In fact, after a review of the security arrangements, on June 5, the Z+ security of RJD chief Lalu Prasad and former Chief Minister Rabri Devi was withdrawn and in its place they were given the security of Bihar Special Armed Police (BSAP). This decision of the government had created a political controversy. RJD had alleged that the lack of security was politically motivated and aimed at targeting opposition leaders. At the same time, Lalu and Rabri had also returned the rest of their government security in protest, while the leader of opposition in the state assembly, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav had also given up his government security.
Security cut is an ‘insult’ to Lalu family
RJD’s chief spokesperson Shakti Yadav had called the cut in security level an ‘insult’ to the Lalu family. He had said that both Lalu and Rabri have been Chief Ministers of Bihar and Lalu is a senior national politician. The party says that the cut in security has given rise to serious concerns about their safety. Shakti Yadav had accused the state government of targeting opposition leaders.
22 security personnel are deployed for Z category security.
However, now the Central Government has again given Z category security to both Lalu and Rabri. Under the revised arrangement, they will get central security cover including bulletproof vehicles and escort vehicles provided by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. The Z category security cover consists of about 22 security personnel including trained commandos and armed police personnel. These security personnel provide round the clock security. The security personnel are equipped with modern weapons including MP5 submachine guns.
