Balen Shah, who was preparing for the entry of a third country in the border dispute with India, seems to be getting a big shock. On one hand, Britain has rejected Kathmandu’s request. On the other hand, China has also not given any positive response to the proposal of becoming a mediator. In such a situation, it is believed that Balen Shah’s plan to resolve the border dispute may fail. Since becoming the Prime Minister, Balen has been highlighting the border dispute with India.
On Sunday (May 31), Balen told the Nepal Parliament that I have contacted China and Britain for an agreement. My effort is to resolve this dispute.
Britain rejected the offer to become a mediator
The Telegraph in Nepal Britain There is a report quoting Ambassador Rob Fenn. It said that the advisor to the Nepal Prime Minister had asked Fen to mediate. Nepal said that Britain had been a party to the Sugauli Treaty. In such a situation, his words will be taken seriously.
Sugauli agreement was signed in 1816. In this agreement the boundaries between Nepal and India were fixed. However, later Nepal expressed protest regarding Lipulekh and Kalapani. Nepal said that due to change in geographical conditions, India has occupied some of its areas.
Nepal had appealed to Britain for a compromise in this matter, but Britain has rejected this proposal. Ambassador Fan said that this is a bilateral matter between India and Nepal. Britain will not be included in this.
China remained silent on Nepal’s proposal
Nepal’s Prime Minister Balen Shah told the Parliament that we have also contacted China for this. The Nepalese government has also asked the Chinese ambassador to mediate in the land issue, but China has not responded. China has not even issued any official statement on this.
Nor has it been told from Nepal that China can take any initiative on this in the coming time. Interestingly, from time to time Nepal has also been accusing China of occupying its land.
In 2020, Nepal media claimed in a report that Beijing had built some buildings and other structures in Humla district on Nepali territory. Nepal has been accusing China of encroachment near the border posts in Gorkha, Sindhupalchok and Rasuwa.
Big question- Now what will happen next on this issue?
1. The party from which Balen has been elected Prime Minister in Nepal. President of that party Ravi Lamikshan is on Delhi tour. After landing in Delhi, Lamikshane has emphasized on bilateral relations with India. Lamikshane says that no dispute can be dragged on for long.
2. Recently, when the Prime Minister of Nepal had given a harsh statement regarding Lipulekh and Kalapani, India’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Radhnir Jaiswal gave a statement. Jaiswal said that such issues can be discussed face to face.
