Britain’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla will not go to live there even after the renovation of Buckingham Palace is completed. This information has been given in the new financial report of the royal family. The 10-year-long renovation of Buckingham Palace at a cost of about 369 million pounds (about Rs 4,300 crore) is going to be completed in March next year.
Since 1837, Buckingham Palace has been the official London residence of the King or Queen of Britain. It will still remain the main administrative and ceremonial center of the royal family. But King Charles has decided that his official home will remain nearby Clarence House. This will be the first time in history since the time of Queen Victoria that a British monarch will make another royal house his permanent residence instead of Buckingham Palace.
Why was this decision taken?
According to palace officials, the biggest reason for this decision is that Buckingham Palace can be opened to the general public for a longer period than before. Now every year in summer, tourists can see the state rooms of the palace. If Raja stays there, many parts will have to be kept closed due to security reasons. With the king staying away, more people will be able to visit the palace and the income from tourism will also increase. King Charles and Queen Camilla have lived in Clarence House since their marriage in 2005. This building is near St. James’s Palace and was previously the home of the Queen Mother.
Both are now over 70 years of age and they do not want the hassle of moving house again with their staff. However, he will continue to carry out most of his royal work from Buckingham Palace. State banquets, garden parties, meetings with foreign leaders and new ambassadors and meetings with the Prime Minister will take place at Buckingham Palace as before. There will also be some private rooms for them in the palace, where they can rest during work or stay if needed. The royal spokesperson said that King Charles is very fond of Buckingham Palace. Like before, this palace will remain the biggest center of royal and government programs.
King Charles shared tax information
It has also been told in the report that King Charles has become the first British Emperor who has made public the information about his tax payments. He paid 12.9 million pounds in tax in 2024-25 and 11.7 million pounds in 2023-24. Because of this, he was among the 100 highest tax paying people in Britain that year.
The Sovereign Grant for the repairs of Buckingham Palace was increased from 2017. After the repairs are completed, this amount will reduce from £137.9 million to £99.9 million in 2027-28. The money will also be used to renovate other royal palaces, strengthen cyber security, install energy-saving heating systems and replace old boilers at Windsor Castle.
