
A video of a woman suddenly falling into a manhole has surfaced in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This incident happened when the 32 year old woman was busy with her mobile phone while walking on the road. She was looking at something on her phone when suddenly her foot falls on the lid of the manhole, due to which the lid overturns and she falls straight into the drainage system below.
This entire incident was captured in the CCTV camera installed nearby. In the video of this incident that took place on Sunday, it can be seen that Fabiana was walking on the road after getting down from the motorbike taxi. During this time she was looking at her mobile. Meanwhile, as soon as she stepped on the lid of the manhole, it opened and the woman fell into a deep pit.
Emergency services evacuated
After this, the motorbike driver who left Fabiana immediately ran back. Along with this, nearby passersby also ran to help. Everyone tried to get Fabiana out but did not succeed. As soon as information about the incident was received, the emergency services team reached the spot and took the woman out safely.
‘I thought I would die’
After being pulled out of the manhole, Fabiana was admitted to the hospital. While talking to the media, she said that she thought that now she will die and will not be able to survive. He told that the pit was very deep and the water filled in it was reaching his chest. She said, ‘I thought I would die’. While falling, the heavy cover of the manhole also hit his body, due to which he suffered injuries at many places.
Attempt to steal became the cause of the accident
According to local reports, the accident occurred due to incorrect installation of the manhole cover. The cover was reportedly misplaced after two metal thieves allegedly moved it during the night. CCTV footage allegedly shows two men removing the manhole cover and then trying to reinstall it without securing it properly.
A similar accident happened in New York also
This incident has come to light at a time when 56-year-old woman Donike Gokaj died after falling into an open manhole in New York City, America, two weeks ago. Gokaj had fallen into a 10-foot deep pit outside Cartier on Fifth Avenue.
Such incidents which are continuously coming to light have raised serious questions on public safety and manhole monitoring system. The number of complaints about open manholes in New York City has nearly doubled this year, public data shows.
