Bollywood Remake Films: There was a time when the identity of Bollywood was its new and powerful stories. Every Friday the audience hoped that they would get to see something new on screen. But, the picture has changed a lot in the last decade. Instead of betting on the original script, many big producers and studios of Bollywood considered making remakes of already successful films a safe option. Hindi remakes of superhit films from South Indian films to Hollywood started being made. This strategy also worked in the beginning. But with time the audience’s preferences changed and this formula started becoming a burden on Bollywood.
The era of Bollywood films has been quite amazing, but ever since remake films have started dominating, people have changed the direction. Remake films have been liked a lot by the people for a while, films like ‘Ghajini’, ‘Wanted’, ‘Singham’, ‘Kabir Singh’ and ‘Simmba’ have earned handsomely and assured that if the hit story is presented with new stars then success is certain. But, after the Corona epidemic, this formula seemed to backfire. OTT platforms have almost broken the language barrier. After which the audience watches the original movies of Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam or Hollywood sitting at home shortly after their release. In such a situation, when the same story comes to the theaters as a Hindi remake after two-three years, there is nothing new left in it.
How is the condition of remake films now?
- After Corona, OTT reduced the demand for remake films.
- The audience has already seen the original film, so there is nothing new in the remake.
- Every remake is immediately compared to the original film on social media.
Where do most remakes come from?
Iconic films also remake
Social media also accelerated this change. Now as soon as the trailer is released, people start comparing it with the original film. This is the reason why in the last few years, remake films of many big stars were seen struggling badly at the box office. The question now is whether Bollywood has a crisis of new stories, or have the makers become accustomed to choosing the easy path? However, it is not that remake films have been made in the last five years, the trend of remake films in Bollywood is quite old, many cult classic films are remakes, about which the audience is not aware.
Why was the remake formula used earlier?
The period from 2010 to 2019 is considered golden for remake films. At that time not every audience had access to South Indian films. OTT platforms were not so popular and films were not discussed that much even on social media. In such a situation, if a Hindi remake of a Tamil or Telugu film was made, then that story would be completely new for most of the audiences. This was the reason why many films performed well at the box office. These films created the belief that making a Hindi remake of a successful story was a low-risk business. After this, many big banners started buying the rights of remake films.

Why did the remake game go wrong?
Between 2021 and 2025, Bollywood continuously bet on remake films. Many films like ‘Tadap’, ‘Bachchan Pandey’, ‘Jersey’, ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’, ‘Vikram Vedha’, ‘Shehzada’, ‘Selfie’, ‘Bhola’, ‘Sarfira’, ‘Baby John’ and ‘Deva’ were released with big stars. Most of these films were official remakes of already hit Tamil, Telugu or Hollywood films. It was expected that these films would perform well at the box office on the basis of star power, but the results were the opposite. Most of these remake films either flopped or could not even recover their costs. Some films like ‘Drishyam 2’ and Shaitan definitely performed well, but the reason for their success was not only because they were remakes, but also because of the strong screenplay, acting and the new story experience for the audience. In the last 5 years, 25 remake films were made, out of which 23 films proved to be flops.
don’t repeat the same mistake
Today the situation has completely changed. Almost every major South Indian film is available on OTT platforms with Hindi subtitles or dubbing. The audience does not wait for new films, but watches them shortly after their release. When the same story is released as a Hindi remake after a few years, the audience already knows what is going to happen next. In such a situation, the excitement of watching the film reduces for them. This is the reason why the opening of many remake films has also started becoming weak.

Social media changed the whole game
Earlier, very few people were aware of a film being a remake. But today, within minutes of the trailer’s release, scenes, dialogues and comparisons from the original film start going viral on social media. on Youtube Original vs Remake Videos are viewed millions of times. The audience can already tell that the original film was much better. This has a direct impact on ticket sales. Due to continuous dependence on remake films, questions are being raised on the creativity of Bollywood.
like original stories
On the contrary, in recent years, original stories like ’12th Fail’, ‘Munjya’, ‘Stree’ have been liked a lot by the audience. These films proved that if there is a good story, films can become superhit even without remakes. In the last two-three years, many filmmakers and trade experts have openly said that now films cannot be run only on the basis of remakes. Audiences now want new stories, new characters and different experiences. This is the reason why many big production houses are now talking about investing more in original script development.
