The uncertainty of families ended
The repatriation of the bodies of the deceased sailors ends weeks of uncertainty and grief for their families. These include the family of 23-year-old deck cadet Aditya Sharma from Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh, who had made a public appeal for help in bringing Aditya’s body home for the last rites.
Sharma’s father Rajeev Sharma had sought the intervention of Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu and MP Anurag Thakur and also sought clear information about the circumstances leading to the deadly attack. Family members had told that Aditya was expected to return home soon and he had extended his assignment on the ship only for a month.
How did the attack happen?
The incident occurred on June 10 when the Palau-flagged oil tanker MT Setebello was attacked by the US Navy about 30 nautical miles off the coast of Sohar in Oman. There were 24 Indian crew members on board this tanker. According to the Indian Embassy, Oman’s Maritime Security Center was immediately informed and local authorities started a search and rescue operation. In this incident, 21 Indian crew members were rescued and are returning home safely, while three Indian sailors died.
