Congress has slammed BJP for calling the procurement of uranium from Australia a breakthrough. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter that BJP’s ecosystem is busy showing that Australia selling uranium to India is Modi’s success. Whereas, on 4 December 2011, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard got approval from her party to sell uranium to India after the India-US nuclear agreement of October 2008.
Jayaram said that BJP’s trolls, including some of its MPs, need to do their homework better. In fact, Australia had lifted the ban on nuclear exports to India in 2011 itself. Congress’s question is that the Modi government should explain that if India was such a ‘trusted strategic partner’, then why did it take 11 years to implement the Nuclear Cooperation Agreement of September 5, 2014?
The BJP ecosystem is on an overdrive to show that Australia’s uranium sales to India are a Modi breakthrough.

The law was made only in 2008
Taking a jibe at PM Modi, Jairam said that Award-Gee has proudly announced that Australia will supply uranium to India. Whereas, this has become possible only because of the United States-India Nuclear Cooperation Agreement, which finally became law on October 8, 2008. It was Dr. Manmohan Singh’s meeting with President George Bush in July 2005 that started the talks.
Attacking BJP, Congress said that during that time BJP had always opposed this change-bringing agreement both inside and outside the Parliament. Congress creates turning points whereas BJP is expert in making U-turning points.
When was the deal done?
On July 9, India and Australia signed several important agreements related to civil nuclear energy, maritime security and essential mineral sector. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese stressed the important role of the partnership between the two countries in ensuring a peaceful Indo-Pacific region.
The agreement on civil nuclear energy, which will see Australia commercially supplying uranium to India to fuel New Delhi’s nuclear power projects, comes more than 10 years after the two countries signed a historic civil nuclear cooperation agreement.
