US President Donald Trump has appointed Bill Pulte as the acting National Intelligence Director (DNI) of America. DNI oversees 18 intelligence agencies of America and is considered the country’s highest intelligence officer. The tenure of current DNI Tulsi Gabbard is ending on June 30, after which Pulte will take over this responsibility.
Bill Pulte comes from a large business family. His grandfather had started America’s famous house-building company Pultegroup. Pulte is also a private investor. However, he does not have any experience related to intelligence agencies or national security. For this reason, a debate has erupted in America regarding his appointment. Trump will have to seek approval from the US Senate for permanent appointment, where his qualifications and experience can be rigorously examined.
What position does Pulte currently hold?
Trump praised Pulte on social media, saying he had successfully led government mortgage companies like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. He said Pulte has experience in handling sensitive cases. For the time being, Pulte will also remain the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA). Many people call Pulte Little Trump. The reason for this is his loyalty towards Trump and his way of working. He is considered very close to Trump. He has provided financial support to Trump’s election campaigns and has also been a member of Trump’s private club Mar-a-Lago in Florida.
Like Trump, Pulte also directly attacks his opponents on social media. He has also openly targeted the Chief of America’s Central Bank (Federal Reserve). Pulte is so loyal to Trump that he starts removing anyone in the government who is seen to be against Trump. They do not believe in the old and traditional methods of government functioning. They want to bring many strange and new changes like including cryptocurrency in the rules of lending.
How is the working experience with Pulte?
Pulte had no government experience before becoming FHFA director. After assuming office, he made major changes in the agency, removed many board members and himself became the chairman of some institutions. Critics allege that Pulte used his position to target Trump’s political opponents. He sent complaints against many politicians for alleged mortgage fraud. These included names like Lisa Cook, Letitia James, Eric Swalwell and Adam Schiff. However, these allegations were later considered weak.
Many Republicans are also against Pulte
Democrat MP Mark Warner said that instead of an experienced intelligence officer, Trump has chosen a person who can act out of political vendetta. According to him, Pulte can also make intelligence agencies into political weapons. Not only Democrats, many Republican leaders have also raised questions on his appointment. Senators John Thune, Susan Collins, James Lankford and John Cornyn said they were not aware of Pulte’s intelligence experience.
