Google bids goodbye to DeepMind after nine years
Senior Research Scientist John Jumper announced that he is leaving Google DeepMind and will join Anthropic. Posting on the social media platform X, he said that after working at Google DeepMind for almost nine years, he has decided to move in a new direction. John Jumper has been awarded the Nobel Prize along with Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis. He is also the co-creator of AlphaFold, an AI system that has predicted more than 200 million protein structures. This technology has helped greatly speed up the years of work required in biological and medical research.
Why is talent war increasing in AI industry?
In the AI sector, there is a tough competition for talented researchers between companies like Google, Meta, Anthropic and OpenAI. Industry experts believe that the number of high-level AI researchers is limited, while their demand is continuously increasing. For this reason, leading AI labs are making every possible effort to engage such experts. According to analysts, companies like OpenAI and Anthropic may have an advantage in this matter because they can promise relatively fewer administrative processes and a more focused research environment. This decision of John Jumper has come amidst this increasing competition, which has once again highlighted the importance of AI talent.
Recognition from Alphafold, new beginning in Anthropic
Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis also reacted to John Jumper’s decision. He said that what was achieved with AlphaFold changed the world and showed how AI can benefit humanity in the fields of science and medicine. According to his LinkedIn profile, John Jumper was working as Vice President and Engineering Fellow at Google DeepMind. The special thing is that he is joining Anthropic at a time when the company is facing legal and regulatory challenges with the US government regarding its AI models. Meanwhile, Anthropic is also preparing to organize a science event on 30 June 2026.
