
Leaders of Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League have got permission to contest in Bangladesh elections. The Election Commission has given this exemption conditionally. Under the new rules, Awami League leaders will be able to contest in the upcoming Panchayat and civic elections. This decision has been taken at a time when questions are being raised about Sheikh Hasina’s political future. Hasina has been living in Delhi since the coup in 2024.

The Commission has taken this decision in view of the soft stance of BNP. It is being said that a section of BNP is in favor of allowing Awami League to contest the elections.
AL leaders will contest elections with conditions
According to the report, the Election Commission has told the leaders of Awami League (AL) that if you want to contest the elections, you will have to file an affidavit. It has to be mentioned that you are not associated with any organization which is banned and which is anti-national. Nominations of the candidates will be accepted after giving the affidavit.
BNP wants Awami League leaders with impeccable image to contest the elections, so that in the future, Awami League gets divided into two factions. In recent times, Awami League leaders have been seen uniting on many occasions in Bangladesh.
However, some leaders believe that this may make Awami League stronger in Bangladesh in the future.
Elections will be held later this year
Panchayat elections are proposed in Bangladesh at the end of this year. The Election Commission is also trying to conduct civic elections at this time. According to Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Minister in charge of Panchayat and civic elections of Bangladesh, elections will be conducted at all places by the end of this year.
General elections were held in Bangladesh in February 2026, in which Tariq Rahman’s party BNP won two-thirds of the seats. Awami League was not allowed to participate in this election.
Sheikh Hasina was overthrown in 2024
Sheikh Hasina was overthrown in August 2024. Hasina’s supporters allege that this coup took place at the behest of America. After this, an interim government was formed in Bangladesh under the leadership of Mohammad Yunus.
Yunus’s government banned Sheikh Hasina’s party, due to which the party could not participate in the 2026 general elections.
