June 25, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Under the new rules, Awami League leaders will be able to contest in the upcoming Panchayat and civic elections. This decision has been taken at a time when questions are being raised about Sheikh Hasina’s political future. Hasina has been living in Delhi since the coup in 2024.

bangladesh According to Aajkar magazine, Sheikh Hasina’s party has been officially banned. Despite this, its leaders have been allowed to contest the elections. The Commission has taken this decision in view of the soft stance of BNP. It is being said that a section of BNP is in favor of allowing Awami League to contest the elections.

AL leaders will contest elections with conditions

According to the report, the Election Commission has told the leaders of Awami League (AL) that if you want to contest the elections, you will have to file an affidavit. It has to be mentioned that you are not associated with any organization which is banned and which is anti-national. Nominations of the candidates will be accepted after giving the affidavit.

However, some leaders believe that this may make Awami League stronger in Bangladesh in the future.

Elections will be held later this year

Panchayat elections are proposed in Bangladesh at the end of this year. The Election Commission is also trying to conduct civic elections at this time. According to Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Minister in charge of Panchayat and civic elections of Bangladesh, elections will be conducted at all places by the end of this year.

General elections were held in Bangladesh in February 2026, in which Tariq Rahman’s party BNP won two-thirds of the seats. Awami League was not allowed to participate in this election.
