Big relief to India Post customers: Refund will be given on cancellation of speed post or parcel booking.

July 17, 2026 by Uma Shankar

There is a very relieving news for crores of customers of India Post and those who use digital services. Now if after booking speed post, parcel or any other postal service, you cancel it for any reason, then your money will not be lost. By making a major amendment in the rules, the Postal Department has given permission to return the postage fee i.e. refund in case of booking cancellation. This step of India Post will prove to be a major milestone in the direction of making its services more consumer friendly and transparent.

India Post issued notification

According to an official notification, India Post has allowed refund of postage fees in case of cancellation of bookings done online or over the counter. According to the notification, senders who have booked postal items themselves through the web portal or mobile app can cancel the booking and claim postage refund before the item is accepted by the post office. The notification said that in case of items booked at the post office counter, the sender can request for cancellation of the booking at the post office or the post office can cancel the booking on the same day of booking due to incorrect data entry.

The rules changed like this

Refund of postage in case of cancellation of booking of postal item will be given as per the administrative instructions issued by the Department of Posts from time to time. The new rule will allow the sender to refund postage, special fees and air surcharge in case of suspension of services as per administrative instructions issued from time to time. The notified rules also permit the sender to recall ‘accountable outward international postal items’ (which can be tracked) from the booking office for any reason, as stated in the instructions issued by the administration.

No fees will be charged

The notified rule allows ‘accountable inward international postal items’ (trackable) to divert (redirect) the item from the delivery office by paying postage fees to the recipient. However, if the new address is in the delivery area of the same post office, no fee will be charged. The new rule will also allow senders of international items to recall or re-ship the item from a foreign destination, subject to the policy of the concerned postal administration as per the administrative instructions in force at that time.
