Mobile numbers are mostly used for registration, login, account recovery and transaction confirmation. Even if you have to log in to the account, OTP comes but now Vodafone has taken the technology one step further to change this method of verification. Vodafone has recently launched Number Verify 2.0 globally, with the introduction of this technology the hassle of OTP will now end.
How technology works
Number Verification 2.0 technology provides a simpler, more secure and convenient way to verify a user’s mobile phone number without the need for a One-Time Passcode (OTP). It uses the mobile network to verify whether the user’s phone number is linked to the SIM and device on both the app and the web. The experience is quite simple, the user has to give consent and then their phone number is immediately shared with the service provider, such as a bank or retailer.
Mobile numbers are most commonly used for registration, login, account recovery, and transaction confirmation, yet the industry’s default verification method has not kept pace with modern fraud threats or user expectations.
SMS OTP merely confirms that someone has entered the code sent to the mobile number. It does not prove whether the request for OTP has been made by the customer or by an unknown person. This exposes businesses and consumers to phishing and social engineering, where automated bots trigger large volumes of OTP requests.
What does the API director say?
Vodafone Johanna Wood, director of network APIs at Google, says the OTP over SMS system has been the default for more than a decade, but it was never designed for today’s threat environment. Number Verification 2.0 changes this, giving developers a way to verify phone numbers that is faster, secure, and easier for users.
Where was this technology launched: This new technology of Vodafone has just been launched in Germany, Netherlands and UK. Number Verification 2.0 is now available, rolling out first to Android devices.
