The Central Government has implemented a new amendment in the LPG Control Order from Monday. This has provided a huge relief to domestic gas consumers. Actually, now if you get piped gas (PNG) installed in your house, then your old LPG cylinder connection will not go waste. The government has officially notified the ‘Liquid Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Amendment Order, 2026’ (LPG Regulation Amendment Order, 2026).
According to the government, the main objective of this new amendment is to provide great relief and convenience to those LPG consumers who get piped natural gas (PNG-piped cooking gas) connections in their homes. Now such consumers will not have the fear of surrendering or losing their old LPG cylinder connection. Consumers can either close their LPG connection within 30 days of receiving the PNG, or they can take a ‘Transfer Voucher’.
Government claims, middle class will get benefit
This strategic and practical decision of the government has been taken keeping in mind the middle class of the country. This arrangement will prove to be especially beneficial for those employees who are often transferred to other cities. Additionally, it will also provide immense relief to migrant families, tenants who frequently move places, students living in hostels or rented rooms, and families planning to move to semi-urban or rural areas where the PNG network is not yet accessible.
Easy switching between LPG and PNG
PNG network is spreading rapidly in big cities of the country. PNG is considered safer and more economical than LPG. However, earlier there was a fear in the minds of consumers that if they surrender their old LPG connection after getting PNG installed, then later on moving to some other place, they will again have to go through the hassle of depositing huge security deposits and a lot of paper work. Through this amendment, the government has removed this apprehension from the minds of consumers forever, making it very easy to switch between these two fuels.
What is the objective of the government?
At the same time, now those who have domestic LPG connection and later take PNG connection, they will not be able to refill the LPG cylinder immediately. The consumer will have to apply for closure of LPG connection within 30 days of taking PNG connection. Or transfer vouchers will have to be taken for future use in non-PNG areas. The Government aims to prevent dual use of domestic LPG in PNG available areas.
