The painful boat accident that happened with Indian tourists in Vietnam has now reached a new turning point. After the loss of lives of 15 Indians in this accident, the Vietnam Police has taken the captain of the speedboat into custody. Officials believe that safety rules may have been ignored in the accident, hence a criminal investigation has been started. This incident has once again raised questions whether safety standards are being followed properly in tourist boats.
This accident happened on July 11 near Vietnam’s famous tourist place Phu Quoc island. There were 32 Indian tourists and four Vietnamese group members on board the speedboat. The boat suddenly capsized at a short distance from the shore. The rescue operation also became difficult due to bad weather and high waves. Although rescue teams evacuated many people safely, the lives of 15 Indian tourists could not be saved.
What did the investigation reveal?
Vietnamese police have detained 57-year-old Captain Nguyen Hong Hai and started interrogation. He is suspected of violating waterway safety rules. The investigating agencies are trying to find out whether the accident happened only due to bad weather or there was negligence in operating the boat. Some eyewitnesses and surviving passengers claimed that the boat capsized within seconds and that adequate medical care could not be immediately provided at the scene.
action of india and vietnam
The Indian Embassy has started the process of sending the bodies of the deceased to India and all possible help is being provided to the families of the victims. The Prime Minister of Vietnam has ordered an investigation into the entire matter and has asked to review the security arrangements of tourist boats. 16 people who survived the accident are returning to India after treatment and one person is undergoing examination in the hospital. According to the embassy, the bodies of the victims were being taken to Ho Chi Minh City before being formally sent to India.
Why is this matter important?
Vietnam has become increasingly popular among Indian tourists in the last few years. Due to easy visa rules and direct flights, a large number of Indians are going to visit there. In such a situation, this accident is not just an accident but also raises a big question on tourism safety. Only after the investigation is completed will it become clear whether it was only a natural disaster or a lapse in safety rules that took the lives of 15 Indians.
