Big action by ED in West Bengal Municipality recruitment scam, charge sheet filed against former minister Sujit Bose

July 11, 2026 by Uma Shankar

The Enforcement Directorate i.e. ED has taken major action in the famous municipal recruitment scam of West Bengal. ED has filed a supplementary charge sheet in the special court of Kolkata under PMLA against former minister and former MLA Sujit Bose, IAS officer Jyotishman Chattopadhyay, Samudra Bose and others. According to ED, this investigation was started on the basis of FIR registered by CBI on the instructions of Calcutta High Court. Sujit Bose was arrested in this case on 11 May 2026. Currently he is in judicial custody

Investigation revealed that when Sujit Bose was the Vice Chairman of South Dumdum Municipality, he had recommended 340 candidates, out of which 284 people got the job. According to municipality records, a total of 343 recruitments were made between 2014 and 2022.

Crores of rupees were made legal like this

ED alleges that to make the amount of crores of rupees received in exchange for providing job appear legitimate, it was first shown as cash sale in a restaurant named ‘Chinese Cuisine’ owned by Sujit Bose. Investigation also found that even during the Covid lockdown, huge cash was deposited in the restaurant accounts. After this, this money was used to expand the hotel and banquet business.

Got many flats in exchange of getting jobs

ED says that properties were purchased by taking loans through shell companies and others and later this money was legalized by showing fake cash sales. The investigating agency also claims that Sujit Bose got several flats in exchange for getting him a job. According to the ED, he made illegal appointments by manipulating the recruitment process and obtained financial benefits in return.

Questions on IAS astrologer Chattopadhyay also

ED has also raised questions on the role of IAS officer Jyotishman Chattopadhyay in its investigation. The agency alleges that while being the local body director, he bypassed the rules and approved 29 additional appointments in South Dumdum Municipality by calling it a ‘special case’, even though the necessary government documents for this were not available. In this case, ED has already filed a charge sheet against accused Ayan Sil in February 2025. The agency says that the investigation of the case is still going on.
