June 3, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Best salt for health: Salt is an important part of Indian food. If even a pinch of salt is reduced in any food then the taste gets spoiled completely. But have you ever wondered which salt is best to eat daily? Recently on Instagram, Dr. Ajay Sharma has told the best salt, which is best for daily use. Actually, there are many options available in the market like iodized salt, rock salt, sea salt and Himalayan pink salt, due to which people often get confused as to which salt to choose?

Salt fulfills the deficiency of iodine in our body. In such a situation, it becomes very important to choose the right salt. Iodine deficiency can cause many health problems including thyroid. Let us know in this article which salt should be consumed daily for health and why?

Is one salt healthier than another?

According to Dr. Sharma, believing that any one salt is much better than the other is not completely correct. Rock salt, Himalayan pink salt, rock salt or ordinary salt available in the market contains 97 to 99 percent sodium chloride only. That means the main component of all these salts is almost the same. Experts say that the quantity of extra minerals claimed to be present in different salts is very less. Some salts are said to contain 84 minerals, but all of them together constitute only 1 percent or less of the salt. In such a situation, these minerals do not have any major effect on the health of the body.

Extra minerals will not be of much benefit

Explaining this in simple language, Dr. Sharma said that it is just like someone finding a 1 rupee coin on the road. This increases his wealth, but such a small gain does not bring any big change in his life. Similarly, the extra minerals present in salt also do not fulfill even 1 percent of the total requirement of the body.

He also said that if a person starts eating more salt just for the sake of these minerals, then the extra sodium can cause harm to the body instead of benefiting it. Excessive salt intake can increase the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease problems.

Is black salt a better option?

According to Dr. Sharma, black salt is a salt which has slightly less amount of sodium as compared to other salts. It contains about 90 percent sodium, while the remaining part is of sulfur compounds, which creates a distinct smell in it. However, excessive amounts of sulfur can cause gas, flatulence and other digestive problems in some people. Therefore, black salt can be used occasionally for taste, but it is not considered the best option for regular consumption.
