Bakri Eid 2026: Is it necessary for every person working at home to make sacrifice?

May 25, 2026 by Uma Shankar

On what basis is Qurbani justified: Eid-ul-Azha or Bakri Eid is the second and biggest festival of Islam religion. Bakri Eid is celebrated every year on the 10th of Zul-Hijja month. On this day, Muslims around the world sacrifice halal animals and distribute their meat. For Muslims, Bakri Eid is not just a festival, but a message of seeking Allah’s pleasure, sacrifice, piety and humanity. The real purpose of sacrifice is to achieve Taqwa, not to show off. There is an order to divide the sacrificial meat into three parts – one part for one’s household, the second part for relatives and the third part for the poor. Often there is a question in the minds of Muslims regarding sacrifice that if all the members of the house are earning or working, should they do sacrifice separately or can the whole family do sacrifice together. Let us know what is the order regarding this.

Sacrifice can be done on any of the 10th, 11th and 12th of the month of Zul Hijja. But the earliest day is considered to be the 10th of Zul Hijja. Some Muslims think that every adult person should make sacrifice. But sacrifice is obligatory on that man and woman on whom Zakat is required and who is wealthy. In such a situation, the question arises whether sacrifice is obligatory on every person who works or earns? Let us know what has been said in Islam regarding this.

On whom is sacrifice justified?

First of all, it removes confusion as to whom sacrifice is justified. The answer is – Sacrifice is obligatory on every Muslim who is Sahib-e-Nisab. Sahib-e-Nisab means a person who has money equal to fifty-two and a half (52.5) tola silver or seven and a half (7.5) tola gold or goods/amount in excess of the required amount. Now the question is whether every earning person in the house will have to make separate sacrifices? The answer is – one sacrifice made by a responsible person of the house is enough for the entire family, no matter how many earning members are there in that house. If a person works or earns money but he is not Sahib-e-Nisab, then sacrifice on him is not permissible. In such a situation, a responsible person from the family can get the sacrifice done. A hadith related to this has been narrated –

According to Sunan at-Tirmizi (Hadith number: 1505) and Sunan Ibn Majah (Hadith number: 3147), Ata bin Yasar asked Hazrat Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (ra) what was the method of sacrifice in the time of the Messenger of Allah? He replied, “A man used to sacrifice a goat on behalf of himself and his family, then they themselves would eat it and feed it to others as well.” This Hadith clearly states that the sacrifice of one animal from a household is sufficient to fulfill the Sunnah of the Prophet.
