July 14, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Story of Badrinath Temple: Badrinath Dham, situated in the lap of Himalayas in Uttarakhand, is counted among the most sacred pilgrimages of Hindu religion. This major stop of Chardham Yatra becomes the center of faith for lakhs of devotees every year. There are many beliefs prevalent about Badrinath Dham, which make it even more special. One of these beliefs is that neither lightning nor the sound of dogs barking is heard around the temple premises nor the clouds thunder loudly. Although there is no scientific evidence for these beliefs, for centuries local people and devotees have associated them with the blessings of Lord Badri Vishal.

What is the secret of peace of Badrinath temple?

According to mythology, Badrinath Dham Lord Vishnu in the form of Nar-Narayan is doing penance in concentration. To ensure that there is no hindrance in the worship of God, nature itself helps in their meditation, that is why it is said that there is no lightning around the temple premises, no dogs bark and the loud thunder of the clouds is also rarely heard. Devotees consider it to be the effect of the divine presence of Lord Vishnu and the spiritual power of the Dham.

Other special things related to Badrinath Dham

The Alaknanda river flowing in front of the Badrinath temple and the nearby Tapt Kund also have special religious significance. Devotees take bath in the hot pond before visiting the temple. It is believed that this purifies both body and mind. There are also many religious places near the temple like Narada Kund, Brahma Kapal, Charan Paduka, Bhima Pul and Mana Village, where a large number of devotees come for darshan.

Importance of Badrinath Dham in Chardham Yatra

Chardham of Uttarakhand includes Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Among these, Badrinath Dham is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is considered the last stop of the Chardham Yatra. It is believed that the journey is considered complete only after visiting all four Dhams. Situated at an altitude of about 3,133 meters above sea level, Badrinath Temple is built on the banks of Alaknanda River. The snow covered mountains all around and the peaceful atmosphere give a spiritual experience to the devotees coming here.

Which God is worshipped?

Badrinarayan form of Lord Vishnu is worshiped in Badrinath Dham. The dark colored statue of Lord Vishnu is present in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, which is considered to be made of Shaligram stone. The Lord is seated here in Padmasana posture, which is considered different from the idols of other Vishnu temples. According to religious belief, Lord Vishnu had performed penance at this place. At that time, Goddess Lakshmi took the form of Badri i.e. plum tree and saved them from sun and snow. For this reason God was called Badrinarayan and this place was called Badrinath.

History of Badrinath Dham

It is believed that Adi Shankaracharya had reestablished this temple in the eighth century. After this, this Dham became a major pilgrimage of Vaishnav tradition. Every year the doors of the temple open in April or May and are closed for winter after Diwali. In winter, Lord Badrinath is worshiped in the Narasimha temple located in Joshimath.
