West Bengal Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari has made a big announcement after a virtual meeting with Union Health Minister JP Nadda. He announced that Ayushman Bharat cards will be given in the state from July. Rs 976 crore was allocated for Bengal under Ayushman Bharat scheme. This will bring the state back into the Centre’s flagship health insurance program.

Shubhendu Adhikari According to this, about six crore beneficiaries currently covered under the Swasthya Sathi scheme run by the state will be brought under Ayushman Bharat. He said that this step will not only benefit the residents of West Bengal but also the people of the state working elsewhere in the country.

The Ayushman Bharat scheme was originally launched in West Bengal on September 23, 2018, but the then Trinamool Congress government withdrew from the program on January 10, 2019 and decided to focus on its Swasthya Saathi health coverage model instead. There was also a controversy when TMC criticized the Center regarding the branding and credit sharing of this scheme.
