
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been buried months after he was killed in attacks that started the Iran war. He ruled Iran for nearly 37 years before he was killed in US and Israeli air strikes during the war that began on February 28. He was buried in his hometown Mashhad this morning after several days of public mourning.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is the second ruler of the country who is buried in Mashhad city. Nader Shah was buried in this city when he was assassinated in 1747, after being in power for almost 11 years.
The funeral procession began on Saturday, with authorities closing roads, airspace and everyday activities in Iran’s capital Tehran and other cities. Huge crowds paid tribute to the leader who led Iran for decades and fiercely fought the West.
