July 2, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Ex-Big Bash player Aaron Summers: A former fast bowler, who played in Australia’s domestic cricket circuit and the Big Bash League (BBL), is facing jail for sexually assaulting a minor girl. Former Hobart Hurricanes and Tasmania Tigers player Aaron William Summers changed his stance in the Supreme Court of Tasmania in the last week of June and pleaded guilty to two serious charges related to child sexual abuse and grooming. This matter is of the year 2018, when Summers was a part of the Hobart Hurricanes team. The court will announce the punishment in this case in the month of August.

Exploited in school after being trapped on social media

According to the information presented in the court, this incident took place in Hobart on 16 January 2018. Fast bowler Aaron Summers contacted a 15-year-old minor girl through social media and sent her messages. After this, Summers picked her up in his car near her house and took her to a local school, where he sexually assaulted the minor girl. Now he has to be sentenced in this case.

The judge rejected the plea for relief

During the court hearing, Summers’ lawyer Caroline Graves argued that the incident occurred during a ‘difficult time’ for her client, when he had become isolated from society and was using social media excessively. The lawyer claimed that Summers now understood his crimes and the chances of him doing it again were very low. He requested the court to consider a completely suspended sentence. However, Justice Helen Wood outright rejected the possibility of this relief. After this, Summers, who was out on bail, was immediately taken into custody.

Have already served jail sentence

This is not the first time Aaron Summers has been implicated in sex crimes involving children. Earlier in the year 2021, he was found guilty on charges of possessing and disseminating child exploitation material in the Northern Territory, for which he has also served a jail sentence. Let us tell you, Summers played one match for Hobart Hurricanes at the end of 2017 and after making his debut in 2018, played three ODI matches for Tasmania. He has also played abroad on short contracts and was preparing to play in English domestic cricket. Along with this, he has also played 2 matches in Pakistan Super League.
