Four Indian citizens were killed, while one Indian was seriously injured in the attack on the commercial cargo ship MV Golden Leo, which departed from Odessa port in Ukraine. India has lodged a strong protest against this incident and termed the targeting of commercial ships as highly condemnable.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), at the time of the attack on the evening of 19 July 2026, there were 17 crew members on board the ship, which included five Indian citizens. According to the information, four Indians lost their lives in the attack, while one Indian is hospitalized in a critical condition. The Ministry of External Affairs said that the Indian Embassy in Ukraine is continuously monitoring the entire incident and all possible assistance is being provided to the affected Indians.
The Government of India has expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the speedy recovery of the injured Indian. India clearly said in its official statement that attacking commercial ships, putting the lives of innocent civilian crew at risk and hindering freedom of maritime navigation and global trade is completely unacceptable and condemnable. India stressed the need to refrain from such attacks and ensure the security of international sea lanes.
