Method of worshiping ancestors and offering tarpan
On the day of Ashadh Amavasya, wake up early in the morning and take bath in the holy river or by mixing Ganga water in the water at home. After this, put water, red sandalwood and red flowers in a copper pot and offer it to the Sun God. During this time keep chanting the mantra Om Suryay Namah. Then, at an auspicious time, take clean water in a copper or bronze vessel. Add some raw milk, barley, sesame and kusha in water. After this, stand facing south and offer water to your ancestors by pouring water from your thumb to Anjali (hands).
Prepare food for the peace of the ancestors’ souls. Take out portions of the food for the cow, dog, crow, deer and ants. By doing this the ancestors become very happy. After Tarpan, offer food to any worthy Brahmin with respect and then donate sesame seeds, food grains, clothes or a vessel filled with water to them as per your capacity.
