Rules of Ashadh month: The month of Ashadh has special religious significance in Sanatan Dharma. This is the month in which Lord Vishnu goes into Yoga Nidra and Chaturmas begins. According to Hindi calendar, Ashadha is the fourth month of the year. During this period, special benefits are obtained from worship, recitation, fasting, bathing, chanting, penance etc. It is believed that worshiping Lord Vishnu in the month of Ashadha, doing charity and adopting a virtuous life brings happiness and prosperity.

According to Drik Panchang, the month of Ashadh is starting from 30th June in the year 2026. This month will end on 29th July 2026. Ashadh Purnima will also be celebrated on this day. Along with worship, fasting etc. for the month of Ashadha, some special rules are also mentioned in the religious scriptures. There are some works which are considered completely prohibited to be done in this month. Let us know about these works in detail.

Do not do this work in the month of Ashadh

After the beginning of Chaturmas in the month of Ashadha, auspicious works like marriage, house warming, mundan are not done, hence do not do these works even by mistake. Do not disrespect or waste water. Do not consume stale food. Avoid eating fried and excessively spicy things. Do not consume meat, alcohol and other tamasic foods. Do not eat leafy vegetables like cabbage, spinach, lentils and brinjal. Avoid quarrels and harsh words.

What to do in this month?

In the month of Ashadha, after morning bath, offer water to the Sun God from a copper pot. Worship Lord Vishnu daily and chant his mantras. Recite Vishnu Sahasranama regularly. Include juicy and seasonal fruits like watermelon, melon, cucumber in your diet. Take bath in the holy river on Ekadashi, Amavasya or Purnima day. Give more time to chanting, penance, meditation and religious practices. Adopt satvik food and balanced daily routine. Donate umbrellas, slippers, juicy fruits like watermelon, melon and cucumber to the needy people.

Religious significance of Ashadh month

The month of Ashadha is very important in terms of devotion to Lord Vishnu. Devshayani Ekadashi fast is observed on the Ekadashi date of Shukla Paksha of this month. Chaturmas begins from this day. On this day Lord Vishnu goes into Yoga Nidra and then wakes up after four months on Devuthani Ekadashi. Many auspicious works in Hindu religion come to a halt during Chaturmas. This time is best for meditation, devotion, chanting and penance.
