Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that the Israeli army will remain deployed in the security zone created in southern Lebanon as long as it is needed to protect the people of Israel. He also reiterated that Israel will not allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons at any cost. Netanyahu said these things during the JNS International Policy Summit 2026 in Jerusalem.
Netanyahu said that Israel foiled Iran’s plan by which it could have become a major threat to Israel by making a nuclear bomb. He claimed that if Israel had not launched Operation Rising Lion and Operation Roaring Lion, Iran would have had a nuclear bomb today. According to him, with the cooperation of the US Air Force and Army, huge damage was caused to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. He claimed that Iran’s nuclear capability has been significantly weakened by these attacks.
Israel’s stance will not change: Netanyahu
Netanyahu said that Israel has dealt a major blow not only to Iran’s nuclear program but also to the Iran-backed terrorist network. Referring to the US-Iran talks going on in Switzerland, Netanyahu said that whatever the outcome of the talks, Israel’s stance will not change. He said, as long as I am the Prime Minister of Israel, Iran will never be able to acquire nuclear weapons.
On the presence of Israeli army in southern Lebanon, he said that this step has been taken only for the safety of civilians. He said that no country can jeopardize the security of its people.
Fighting Hezbollah, not Lebanon: Netanyahu
Netanyahu also said that Israel’s fight is not with Lebanon, but with Hezbollah. According to him, Hezbollah is also harming Lebanon and wants to destroy Israel. He expressed hope that if Hezbollah was destroyed or forced to give up its weapons, a peace agreement could be reached between Israel and Lebanon in the future. He said he looked forward to signing such an agreement.
