Army is not getting resources… Two British Defense Ministers left their posts after making allegations

June 12, 2026 by Uma Shankar

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has suffered a major setback. Defense Secretary John Healey resigned due to differences with the government over the defense budget. He said that the government is not providing money and resources to the British Army as per its requirement. Shortly after Healey’s resignation, Armed Forces Minister Al Carnes also stepped down. He said in his resignation that the government is not able to provide the facilities and support to the army that it needs.

Carnes says that the world is changing rapidly and the method of war is also changing, but the process of purchasing weapons and equipment for the army is not progressing that fast. He said that the British Army has to work in a more dangerous environment than ever before, but its budget has been fixed according to a time when the world was relatively peaceful.

Dan Jarvis appointed as new Defense Secretary

After the resignations, the British government has appointed Dan Jarvis as the new Defense Secretary. This entire controversy has come to light at a time when the government is going to present a new plan to strengthen Britain’s defense system before next week’s NATO summit. However, due to differences within the government regarding the budget, the announcement of this scheme has been postponed several times.

Starmer responded to the allegations

Prime Minister Starmer, in his reply to Healey, said that his government has taken several major steps to increase defense spending. He said that after coming to power in 2024, his government increased defense spending by cutting the international aid budget. According to Starmer, this is the largest continuous increase in the defense budget since the Cold War.

Starmer says that the new defense investment plan will provide necessary resources to the army and will also boost employment and economic development in Britain. On the other hand, Healy alleges that despite the increasing global threats, the government and the Finance Ministry are not ready to provide sufficient money to the army. He reminded that recently Starmer himself had said that according to British intelligence agencies, Russia could reach a position of attacking NATO countries by 2030.

Pressure on Starmer to step down

These resignations have further increased Starmer’s political problems. His popularity has already fallen after his poor performance in the last local elections. Now many leaders of his party are also demanding him to step down, due to which the pressure on his government has increased further.
