
Another important step has been taken towards giving greater strength to Make in India. After successful trials of Suraksha rocket launcher system, now about 5 lakh artillery shells will be manufactured every year at NIBE’s Defense Manufacturing Complex located in Shirdi, Maharashtra. It is considered to be the largest artillery ammunition production center in the private sector of India.
This state-of-the-art defense production project will be inaugurated today (Saturday, May 23) by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. Complete preparations have been made for the program. According to the company, this decision will give a big boost to India’s defense production capacity and will ensure faster supply of indigenous ammunition to the army.
Big achievement in defense manufacturing sector
Located at Shirdi in Ahilya Nagar district of Maharashtra, this new complex is a significant achievement in India’s private sector defense manufacturing sector. The facility is designed to promote advanced manufacturing in critical areas of defense and aerospace, reinforcing India’s growing capabilities in indigenous technology and strategic production.

Recent trials of the Sun rocket launcher system have also been successful, after which preparations for its mass production have been started. State-of-the-art artillery shells, missile systems, drones and rocket launchers like 155mm, 120mm, L-50 and 125mm are being produced.
Total cost more than ₹3,000 crore
The project is spread over approximately 200 acres (expandable to 3,000 acres in future), with a total cost of more than ₹3,000 crore. Rs 1,000 crore will be spent as initial investment in this project. Under this project, which will generate employment for two thousand people, advanced products will be manufactured for defense and aerospace sectors. This unit will provide direct and indirect employment to more than 2,000 people in the area and will give a boost to local MSME industries. Along with promoting indigenization, the target is to export about 70% of the total defense equipment manufactured in this plant to other countries.
Rajnath Singh will inaugurate
This project is being implemented by NIBE Group of Maharashtra. Shirdi Defense Manufacturing Complex (DMC) will be inaugurated by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on May 23. On this occasion, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Chief of Defense Staff General Anil Chauhan and Maharashtra Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil will also participate in the program.
