Another blow to BJP in Tamil Nadu, former MLA joins TVK, says – there is no democracy left there

June 7, 2026 by Uma Shankar

BJP’s troubles in Tamil Nadu are not ending. After state chief K. Annamalai, now former MLA AG Sampath has left the party. He has joined TVK, the first political party that came to power. Sampath had expressed no hope of joining the new movement ‘Eedhu Namma Iyakkam’ (This is our movement) started by Annamalai. He now joined Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam.

What was the reason for resignation?

AG Sampath cited the first and primary reason for leaving the party as the persistent lack of democracy in the state, differences of opinion within the BJP and separatist attitude along with the sentiments of the people of the state. He further said that BJP has hurt not only President Annamalai but also the leaders working in the party like him. It is true that I supported BJP for the social welfare of Tamil Nadu so that we can bring positive changes in the state.

After that Sampath said that BJP’s decision to leave the party was inspired by Annamalai’s decision. After Annamalai’s departure, it became necessary to resign, because before his departure this party was following his footsteps. But the party has now deviated from its original objective. The sentiments of the people of the state had no value, BJP failed to live up to the people there. He said that I have always been Annamalai’s disciple, following his guidance, but now after his departure, there is no purpose left for me to stay in this party. Therefore, I am now tendering my resignation as soon as possible.

BJP President’s appeal, don’t leave the party

Tamil Nadu BJP President Nayanar Nagendran on Saturday urged the workers not to leave the party. He also talked about having faith in PM Modi. He said that BJP is a ‘big party’, whose leader is Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Speaker said that the departure of leaders like Annamalai will have ‘no impact’ on BJP. Many leaders come and go.
Annamalai said that my view of Tamil Nadu and the view of BJP are different, hence there were differences between us, due to which I thought it appropriate to resign, while Nagendran said that BJP is a central party and it will not support any kind of new movement or political institution.
