Ancestor Photos Vastu: Where should photos of ancestors be kept in the house? These rules of Garuda Purana can change your luck

June 18, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Vastu Tips for Ancestor Pictures: When someone says goodbye to this world, only their memories remain, which become our support. Their photographs kept in the house make us feel their presence, but according to Sanatan tradition and Garuda Purana, photographs of deceased relatives should not be hung anywhere in the house. Special rules have been made for this, which have been said to be followed.

According to Garuda Purana and Vastu Shastra, pictures of ancestors should always be hung on the south or west wall of the house. When the picture is placed in this direction, the ancestors appear to be facing north or east. These directions are considered to be the direction of positive energy and Gods, due to which the blessings of the ancestors always remain on the family.

Do not keep pictures of ancestors in the temple

Many people keep the pictures of their ancestors with God in their home temple out of reverence. According to Garuda Purana, this is completely wrong. No matter how revered the ancestors are, they cannot be given the same status as gods and goddesses. Keeping God and ancestors at the same place is against the scriptures and creates defects in the house.

Putting pictures of ancestors near the stairs, in the bedroom or in the corners of every room of the house makes the atmosphere of the house heavy and negative. Seeing many pictures of the same person again and again prevents the mind from recovering from the pain of the past. It also has a bad effect on the mental health of the members living in the house.

The biggest mistake people often make is putting photographs of deceased ancestors in frames with living ancestors. It is clearly stated in Garuda Purana that this should never be done. This has a very negative impact on the age and health of the living people present in the picture.

The right middle part of the house is called ‘Brahmasthan’, pictures of ancestors should never be placed there, it reduces the respect of the family members. Apart from this, keeping pictures of ancestors in the kitchen can lead to everyday fights, discord and financial crunch (i.e. lack of money) in the house.

Place photo on stand or shelf

Instead of hanging the pictures of your ancestors on the wall, it is considered better to keep them on a strong stand or shelf. Do not keep the pictures at the main entrance of the house or at such a place where the eyes of the people passing by fall directly on them. Never keep such photographs of your ancestors in which they look sad, sick or distressed. Always choose photos in which they look smiling and calm.

The purpose of Sanatan Dharma and scriptures is not to create fear in the mind of man, but to balance his emotions. Photographs of ancestors should be kept in limited numbers and at appropriate places. The purpose of memories is to inspire us, not to cage us in the past. Give place to the ancestors in the heart and give them place within the limits prescribed by the scriptures, happiness and prosperity will automatically come to the house.
