Amidst the war, Tehran showed its attitude to Trump… announced the cancellation of MoU

July 18, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Amidst the ever-increasing war with America, Iran announced that it will officially stop the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed to end the enmity between the two countries. This is the first time that the Iranian government has publicly admitted that the MoU signed last month is no longer effective.

iran According to Fars news agency, Iran’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi said that the US was the first to violate its responsibilities under the MoU on cessation of hostilities and said, “We will not enforce any responsibilities now.”

He said, “Our biggest priority right now is to protect the country,” and added, “America must have realized that it cannot achieve anything through military pressure.” He further said, “If they are sensible, they should choose some other option.”

Iran ended MOU

This is the first time that the Iranian government has officially announced the termination of the MoU and a moratorium on implementing its responsibilities.

On the 17th of last month, America and Iran had signed an MoU to end hostilities, which included ensuring safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and continuing nuclear talks for 60 days. However, despite some narrowing of differences over how to manage the Strait of Hormuz, talks made little progress and the two countries returned to armed clashes this month.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said that it carried out air strikes on Iran for the seventh consecutive day. The US has attacked surveillance facilities, logistics support facilities and underground weapons depots and has recently expanded its targets to civilian infrastructure such as airports, railways and bridges.

War intensifies between America and Iran

Iran is also continuing retaliatory attacks targeting US forces and US allies in the Gulf region. In Kuwait, a power plant and parts of a desalination facility were hit by Iranian attacks, halting the operation of power equipment and causing the international airport to temporarily suspend flights due to missile and drone threats, according to Agence France-Presse.

Bahrain said it intercepted Iranian airstrikes with its air defense network, and Qatar and Jordan also announced they shot down missiles approaching their airspace.

The situation in the Middle East is worsening as tensions on the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea are simultaneously increasing. With Iran formalizing the suspension of implementation of the MoU on cessation of hostilities, the chances of an early ceasefire through a diplomatic solution have further diminished.
