Israel’s opposition leader Yair Lapid gave a big statement on Monday. He said that the potential agreement between the US and Iran fails to fulfill any of Israel’s objectives in relation to the conflict. If this agreement is reached then it will be bad for Israel. Lapid is part of a coalition trying to oust Netanyahu from power in this year’s elections.
Speaking to media in Jerusalem, Lapid said the deal is bad for Israel, bad for the region, and bad for the citizens of Iran. In fact, Israel and America started this conflict on February 28, in which they started the war to eliminate Iran’s ballistic missile program, end its support for proxy terrorist groups throughout the region and eliminate its ability to make a nuclear bomb.
Both Netanyahu and President Donald Trump also expressed hope that they would create conditions that could lead to the overthrow of Iran’s government. But this could not happen and America had to impose ceasefire.
What is going on between America and Iran?
According to media reports, under the possible agreement, Iran would give up its stockpile of highly enriched uranium and reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz. In return, the US will lift the blockade of Iran’s ports and will also lift the sanctions currently in place against the country. After this, within 60 days, important details related to Iran’s nuclear program will be negotiated. It is still unclear whether the deal will address Iran’s missile capabilities or its support for regional terrorist groups.
Trump’s gratitude, Netanyahu’s criticism
Lapid thanked Trump for starting the war with Israel, but criticized Netanyahu for allowing Washington to negotiate a potential deal with little coordination with Israel. He also said that Trump had said last week, Netanyahu will do only what I want him to do.
Lapid has defeated Netanyahu
Lapid had briefly served as prime minister in 2022 under an agreement with Naftali Bennett, leader of a small conservative party. His coalition government ended Netanyahu’s 12-year rule.
