America’s President Donald Trump and his administration are constantly doing something or the other. Some new things have also been included in this list. The Trump administration decided to change the name of the Defense Department to the Department of War. Similarly, the official name of US Indo-Pacific Command was changed to US Pacific Command (USPACOM). Congress has targeted America for removing the word Indo from its name.
Taking a jibe at PM Modi and the central government, the Congress said, “Again a new day, and another insult to India from America. This is the gift of a ‘Compromised Prime Minister’ Narendra Modi.” Yesterday on Wednesday, America reinstated the name of its oldest command US Pacific Command (USPACOM). Earlier, the name of this command was changed to US Indo-Pacific Command in the year 2018. But now the word Indo has been removed from it. It is believed that this decision is a severe attack on the importance and credibility of India.
Our importance for America has decreased: Congress
Highlighting the statement of the US Defense Minister, the main opposition party Congress said that in May 2018, during Trump’s first term, the then Defense Minister Jim Mattis had proudly named it Indo-Pacific Command. And then he had said that, “We have to recognize the growing importance of the Indian Ocean, the Indian subcontinent and of course India itself. So I want to ensure that the name of the command reflects the reality on the ground.”
Congress said then that this was a step which acknowledged the emerging power of India. Mattis also talked about partnerships from Bollywood to Hollywood, Penguin to Polar Bear. This was also considered a big step from the perspective of QUAD, which includes America, India, Japan, Australia. But now, after 8 years, during the rule of the same President Trump, the word Indo has been removed. In removing India’s name, it is a clear American message that our importance for America has decreased.
‘Removing the name INDO is not a small matter’
Attacking PM Modi, Congress said that this name change has happened at a time when America brutally killed our sailors, Marco Rubio insulted India, one-sided trade deal was imposed on us, very high tariffs were also imposed on us, anti-India immigration policies were made and it increased its closeness with the enemy country Pakistan.
Regarding the removal of the name INDO, the Congress said, “Removing the name INDO is not a small thing because the intention is to send a message. Otherwise, one rarely changes the name of one’s major command twice in 8 years. This name change is an insult to India. But the entire country is suffering the consequences of having a ‘compromised Prime Minister’ who has no time for his Instagram reel.” Congress said that PM Modi could not muster the courage to raise this issue in his meeting with Trump, but one thing is clear that America has ‘pressed a big nerve’ of Modi.
The command was formed during the era of President Truman
Earlier on Wednesday, America has reversed its 8 year old decision and changed the name of US Indo-Pacific Command to US Pacific Command (USPACOM). Announcing this decision, the US Defense Ministry said that the name US Pacific Command was coined in 1947 by the then President Harry S. Respects the historical roots of the command established by Truman.
Additionally, the area of responsibility map available on the US Pacific Command website has evoked political reactions in the country. The borders of India have not been shown correctly in this. In the map, Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Aksai Chin are not shown as part of India.
