America hits back at Iran, attacks missile-drone sites, takes revenge for attack in Hormuz

June 26, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Tension between America and Iran has started increasing once again. America targeted Iranian missile and drone sites on Friday. This attack was carried out in response to a drone attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz. US President Donald Trump said that this attack was a violation of ceasefire.

The US Central Command said that the army attacked missile and drone sites and coastal radar sites in Iran. This attack happened when Trump had told journalists that you will know whether America will respond to the drone attack or not.

Trump stopped the press conference midway

Shortly before the retaliatory attack at the White House, Trump said, I don’t like the fact that they attacked, actually four attacks. When he was asked that when Trump himself is saying that talks with Tehran are going well, then why would there be attacks, Trump said about Iran, they are a little different. After this he suddenly stopped the question-answer session and the journalists were sent out of his office.

Attack on a ship off the coast of Oman

The British Army said on Thursday that a container ship was attacked by something near the coast of Oman. The incident occurred just hours after Iran threatened ships not to use that route. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Center said that there was no news of anyone being injured.

This development comes at a delicate time for the US and Iran, when they are negotiating a permanent end to the war. Iran has continuously challenged the region and the United States over its control over the Strait of Hormuz.

Operation to rescue ships stuck in Hormuz

The attack on the cargo ship came as a UN maritime agency was beginning an operation this week to rescue ships stuck in the Strait of Hormuz. For this, instead of passing through Hormuz, they were using an alternative route near the coasts of Oman.

The International Maritime Organization halted the evacuation after the attack and said on Friday that it would not resume until there was a guarantee that other ships would not be attacked.

115 ships succeeded in getting out of Hormuz

The agency’s secretary general, Arsenio Dominguez, said that in recent days about 115 ships managed to escape from Hormuz, while about 500 ships were still stuck in that area. The opening of the alternative route through Hormuz was expected to reduce pressure on the world economy and eliminate Iran’s main source of leverage in the ongoing peace talks with the US.

The US and Iran are still negotiating the terms of the deal, including issues related to the passage of ships through the crucial Strait of Hormuz and the future of Iran’s highly enriched uranium reserves. Under the interim agreement, both sides have 60 days to finalize the details.

Attack on cargo ship poses challenge to shipping

Shipping analysts say that this drone attack has affected the movement of ships which were stuck in the bay and were now slowly coming out. Besides, it has also affected the increasing flow of tankers carrying crude oil. Marine data company Windward said on Thursday that after a week of increasing commercial confidence in the Strait of Hormuz, it has faced its first major challenge.

Attempt to pass through UN-supported route near Oman

The company said that although Hormuz is open for operations with 43 ships passing after the incident, the pace of normalization has slowed. On Wednesday, 78 ships passed through the Strait of Hormuz, the highest number since the war began, although this is less than the daily average of 130 or more ships before the war.

At least two tankers trying to pass through the UN-backed route near Oman were forced to divert after Iran insisted that ships use only routes approved by Tehran, according to marine data and analytics firm Lloyd’s List Intelligence. Lloyds said on Friday that even after the attack, more than two dozen ships were still passing through the southern route of the strait.
