America eyes Russia-Iran oil issue, wants to increase energy trade with India

May 24, 2026 by Uma Shankar

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday. This visit has taken place at a time when relations between India and America are under pressure due to growing concerns regarding trade tariffs, Pakistan and China. There was a detailed discussion between the two leaders on trade, energy security and the global situation.

America’s emphasis on energy cooperation

During the meeting, Rubio said that American energy products can play an important role in meeting India’s energy needs. He stressed that America wants India to diversify its sources of energy supply. America believes that American oil and gas can prove to be a better option for India amid the global energy crisis that arose after the Iran war. Rubio also said that America will not allow the global energy market to come under the influence of Iran. America’s concern has also increased due to increased purchase of Russian oil by India in recent months.

Relations deteriorated due to tariff dispute

During the tenure of US President Donald Trump, heavy tariffs were imposed on India, which created tension in the relations between the two countries. Although relief was later given on many duties under an interim agreement, a comprehensive trade agreement has not been reached yet.

Experts say that the delay in the trade agreement is affecting the relations between the two countries. At the same time, the increasing closeness between America and Pakistan has also become a matter of concern for India.

Discussion on Quad and White House visit

In the meeting, Rubio also invited Modi to visit the White House on behalf of Trump. Besides, there was also discussion regarding the meeting of Quad Foreign Ministers to be held in India next week. The Quad group includes India, America, Japan and Australia.

During the talks, India once again reiterated the need to resolve global disputes through peaceful diplomacy and dialogue. Analysts believe that despite the current challenges, both the countries are trying to keep the strategic partnership strong.
