The interim peace agreement between America and Iran seems to be on the verge of collapse due to increasing tensions. The US military said on Saturday that on the orders of President Donald Trump it attacked several targets in Iran. These attacks are part of a series of attacks that have shaken the fragile ceasefire established during the war. The military said in a post on Twitter that Iran had a chance to respect the ceasefire agreement, but did not do so, because earlier on Saturday its forces attacked a ship near the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s state TV has reported explosions in the north of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the report of Axios, on Saturday America again attacked near the Strait of Hormuz. It was the second consecutive day of military action against Iranian targets, despite a recent ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran.
Attack on the orders of President Donald Trump
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said that these attacks were carried out on the orders of President Donald Trump. Iran is accused of violating the ceasefire by attacking with a ‘one-way attack drone’, which hit the Panama-flagged oil tanker M/T Kiku early Saturday.
CENTCOM said the tanker, carrying more than two million barrels of crude oil, was passing through the Strait of Hormuz when it was attacked at about 4:30 a.m. (ET). The US military said Tehran was given a chance to abide by the ceasefire after the US strikes on Friday, but instead it escalated tensions with the latest attack.
Drone storage and mine-layering capabilities targeted
In response, the US military targeted Iran’s military surveillance infrastructure, communications systems, air defense sites, drone storage facilities, and mine-layering capabilities. Centcom said in a statement that commercial vessels are continuing to transit through the Strait of Hormuz. The US military is alert, lethal and ready.
Meanwhile, Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB quoted a military source as saying that explosions were heard near the southern city of Sirik and that the blasts were linked to multiple projectiles hitting a telecommunications tower. No further information was given immediately in this regard.
Singapore flagged cargo ship targeted
This latest tension has increased after US attacks on Iran’s missile and drone storage bases and coastal radar sites on Friday. Washington said the strikes were a response to Iran’s alleged drone attack on the Singapore-flagged cargo ship M/V Ever Lovely in the Strait of Hormuz on June 25. CENTCOM described Friday’s operation as a strong response to Iranian attacks on commercial shipping and accused Tehran of violating a ceasefire agreement reached earlier this month.
Surveillance continues on maritime trade route
The command said that the unprovoked aggression against commercial shipping by the Iranian military has clearly violated the ceasefire. Also said that the US military will continue to monitor one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes to ensure compliance with the agreement. As tensions escalated, US Vice President JD Vance warned Tehran against taking further military action.
will respond to violence with violence
Vance wrote on X, Iran had signed the ceasefire agreement. We have respected him. If they have any disagreement on how the MOU is being implemented, they can call. But violence will be answered with violence only. This latest military action came shortly after Trump hinted at a possible response to Iran’s alleged actions. Asked by reporters on Friday whether the US would retaliate, the president replied: You’ll find out.
