Amazon’s revelations shocked the senses! Data centers will drink 9 billion liters of water by 2025

June 12, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Data centers consume both water and electricity, so people are worried about this. Amazon wants you to know how efficient Amazon’s data centers are. The company has said that in 2025, approximately 2.5 billion gallons or more than 9 billion liters of water will be used in Amazon’s global data center operations.

This is the first time Amazon has disclosed this figure publicly. Although 2.5 billion gallons of water seems like a large amount, Amazon claims that water use at sites directly operated by the company has declined by 2 percent from 2024 levels, even as it has expanded the size of its data centers. Amazon shared these figures in a blog post at a time when companies running data centers are being closely scrutinized regarding the impact of AI on the environment.

Less water use in Amazon Data Center?

Amazon also shared a chart in the blog post comparing water usage figures with competitors. According to the chart, in 2025, Amazon data centers used 0.12 liters of water per kilowatt/hour of electricity, which is the least compared to companies like Google, Microsoft and Meta.

Google’s numbers shown in the chart represent only the water consumption of the Gemini AI data center. AI data centers typically consume more water due to high-end GPUs. According to reports, Amazon has about 924 data centers globally. A leaked 2022 memo estimated that Amazon’s data centers would use 7.7 billion gallons of water per year by 2030.

Amazon will return the water

Amazon said that it plans to become water positive by 2030. This means that for every gallon of water used in the company’s data center operations, Amazon will return more than a gallon of water back to the community. The company said that so far it has achieved 75 percent of this target.
