But Mayor Alireza Jaqani said in a statement to the news agency that the ceremony had been postponed until after the first 10 days of Muharram, so that people could complete their annual mourning for Imam Hussein. Hussein was an early Shia leader killed in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE.

Iranian officials have announced that the former supreme leader will be buried in his hometown of Mashhad on July 9, 132 days after he was killed in a joint US-Israeli strike. This comes at a time when there is uncertainty over Khamenei’s burial, even though more than 100 days have passed since his assassination.

The burial was originally expected to take place in March, but was delayed amid conflict and months of speculation over security concerns, the location of his remains and the transfer of power to his son and successor, Mojtaba Khamenei.
