
The funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will begin on July 4 in Tehran and end with his burial in the north-eastern city of Mashhad on July 9. Khamenei was killed in Israeli and American attacks on Iran in February. With his death, more than three decades at the helm of the Islamic Republic came to an end, but in view of America and Israel’s attack on Iran, Khamenei’s funeral has not taken place yet, but now Iran has announced the date of the funeral in July.
According to news agency Reuters Ayatollah Ali Khamenei He died in the American attack on 28 February. More than four months after his death, it has now been decided to lay him to rest.
Iran had previously said it planned to hold the three-day event at the beginning of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, which falls in early June.
Died in American-Israeli attack
But Mayor Alireza Jaqani said in a statement to the news agency that the ceremony had been postponed until after the first 10 days of Muharram, so that people could complete their annual mourning for Imam Hussein. Hussein was an early Shia leader killed in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE.
This means that Khamenei’s funeral will start from July 4. Tehran officials had earlier said they expected 20 million people to attend.
The burial was originally scheduled for March, but was postponed due to the war. According to AFP reports, the funeral ceremony will be held for three days in Tehran from July 4, followed by another ceremony in the holy city of Qom on July 7.
Delay in burial ceremony
Iranian officials have announced that the former supreme leader will be buried in his hometown of Mashhad on July 9, 132 days after he was killed in a joint US-Israeli strike. This comes at a time when there is uncertainty over Khamenei’s burial, even though more than 100 days have passed since his assassination.
The burial was originally expected to take place in March, but was delayed amid conflict and months of speculation over security concerns, the location of his remains and the transfer of power to his son and successor, Mojtaba Khamenei.
