Air India is now preparing to slow down its expansion plans. According to media reports, the airline’s owner company Tata Group has instructed the management to focus on reducing losses and strengthening existing operations instead of rapid expansion. Under this, plans to postpone the delivery of new aircraft, cut some flights and start new routes are being reviewed.
Discussion on postponing delivery of 500 aircraft
According to the report, Air India is in talks with Airbus and Boeing to advance the delivery of around 500 previously ordered aircraft. Doing this will help the company to postpone large payments to aircraft manufacturers for some time. In the airline industry, a large part of the price of the aircraft is usually paid at the time of delivery, which puts a lot of pressure on cash.
Review of new routes and airport plans
Air India is also re-evaluating its domestic and international networks. Some less profitable routes may be closed, while the opening of new routes may be postponed for now. Apart from this, the plan to start flights from Noida International Airport being built near New Delhi may also be delayed.
Many challenges increased the difficulties
Air India has faced many major setbacks in the last one year. The plane crash last year damaged the airline’s image. Apart from this, closure of airspace by Pakistan to Indian aircraft and the ongoing conflict in Iran have affected the operation of flights. Fuel costs have increased due to longer routes, while the weak Indian rupee has also increased the company’s costs as many of the airline’s expenses are in dollars.
Losses increasing Tata Group’s worries
In the year 2022, Tata Group acquired Air India and after this a large scale investment was made in the modernization and expansion of the company. Air India had ordered about 600 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing in 2023 and 2024. However, according to reports, the airline has suffered a loss of more than Rs 550 billion since 2022. This is the reason why Tata Group is now emphasizing on cutting expenses and strengthening the financial position while balancing the growth strategy of Air India.
However, Air India has termed these reports as speculation and said that the company is fully committed to the modernization of its fleet and long-term transformation plan. Nevertheless, current circumstances indicate that the airline’s focus in the times to come will be more on profitability and sustainability than expansion.
