Delhi’s Patiala House Court on Monday (June 29) postponed the process of taking cognizance of the charge sheet of Delhi Police against the leaders and workers of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC). The court was told that the necessary approval for cognizance is still pending and it will take time to obtain it.
On April 27, Delhi Police had completed the investigation and filed a charge sheet under Section 217 of the Indian Civil Security Code (BNSS) without the necessary approval. This FIR was registered in connection with the protests that took place during the Global AI Impact Summit at Bharat Mandapam in February 2026. Chargesheet is filed within at least 90 days after the FIR, but in this case the chargesheet was filed within 60 to 70 days. In this way the police did not follow the procedure properly and legally.
SPP requested to take cognizance of the charge sheet
Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Mridul Gupta postponed the process of taking cognizance after hearing the arguments of Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Prashant Prakash and investigating officer Rohit Kumar. SPP requested the court to take cognizance of the main charge sheet and said that the sanction order will be filed in the supplementary charge sheet.
Court directed to speed up the process
On this the court said that there is no rule for cognizance and asked how much time will it take to get the approval? SPP told the court that it will take at least two months. After this, the court directed the investigating officer to speed up the process and listed the case till September 28 for cognizance.
