The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasing rapidly around the world and with it the fear of losing jobs is also increasing. Besides, the debate on AI and jobs has also intensified because big tech companies like Google, Meta, Microsoft and Amazon are spending billions of rupees on AI. Meanwhile, Sam Altman says that his earlier fear of losing his job due to AI was wrong. In many reports, there is a threat of job loss due to AI. A new report has claimed that a large number of employees may lose their jobs in the next two years due to AI. According to the survey, about 90 percent of CEOs believe that AI can reduce the number of employees in the future. This has further increased the concern in the tech industry.
Jobs may be lost due to AI
According to a report by consulting firm Mercer, almost 9 out of 10 CEOs believe that AI can replace employees or reduce headcount in companies in the future. About 1000 top executives and HR leaders of America were included in this survey. The report says that AI is no longer limited to mere experimentation but is changing the way companies work. Many companies feel that AI can automate everyday office work and reduce dependence on humans. This is the reason why many companies may cut employees by up to 20 percent in the next two years.
Layoffs are already going on in tech companies
Amidst the increasing use of AI, layoffs continue in the tech sector. According to the data of Layoffs.FYI, so far in 2026, about 1.15 lakh employees have lost their jobs in more than 150 tech companies. Big companies like Google, Meta, Microsoft and Amazon are increasingly investing in AI tools and generative AI platforms. According to the report, at present about 50 percent of the work in companies is being done entirely by humans, but in the next two years this figure may come down to only 35 percent. This means that the interference of AI is going to increase rapidly in most of the office tasks.
Anxiety and insecurity are increasing among employees
Mercer’s report has also revealed that stress among employees is increasing due to AI and economic uncertainty. Many people are unable to leave their current job despite being dissatisfied due to the fear of losing their job. According to the report, while in 2024, 66 percent of the employees considered themselves in a better position in their job, in 2026 this figure has come down to 44 percent. It is clear from this that the confidence and mental balance of the employees is being affected. Although companies are investing heavily in AI, many firms are still struggling to derive real business benefits from it.
Sam Altman admitted his mistake
Speaking at a Commonwealth Bank of Australia conference in Sydney, Sam Altman said his earlier fear of job losses due to AI was misplaced. He told that AI has not taken away the jobs of as many people as were expected to be lost due to AI, that is, this figure is less. He said that I am happy that I was proved wrong about this. I thought the impact of the loss of entry-level white-collar jobs would have been much greater than it actually has been.
