Apart from the uncertainty in the talks between Washington and Tehran, due to the US maintaining pressure on Iran through sanctions and other means, Iran is also using AI to strengthen its cyber capabilities and disinformation campaigns. In a recent report, it has been informed that Iranian hackers are using tools like Gemini, ChatGPT and other AI programs to create malware and create phishing messages in Hebrew and Arabic languages.
According to the Financial Times report, Iranian operators are using AI-generated identities to win the trust of targets. Israel has been affected by phishing emails and text messages, some of which even called for people to work with Iranian intelligence. The United Arab Emirates said in May that it was facing more than half a million cyber attacks every day, some of which were allegedly being carried out by AI tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Challenges facing tech companies
Big technology companies are aware of the growing threat, but the challenge is becoming increasingly difficult. According to the report, Google had detected the government Iranian group APT42 using the Gemini AI model in late February. It is reported that the group used this system for many research works, which also includes studying the methods related to the American F-35 fighter jet. Technology companies are removing suspicious accounts and preventing misuse.
The use of AI in Iran is not limited to just cyber attacks and online scams. The report also mentions that AI is being used to support electromagnetic warfare, speed up decision making in the battlefield command center and improve drone guidance and underwater targeting systems. IRGC has claimed that some cruise missiles have the ability to avoid AI assisted guidance, navigation and electronic warfare. There is also news that Iran is using AI translation tools to study Western military research, through which analysts can process foreign language materials faster.
