China, one of the world’s largest consumer markets, is now rapidly increasing its interest in jackfruit. Recently, China has approved the import of fresh jackfruit from Vietnam and now it is preparing to buy jackfruit from Bangladesh also. This step of China is not limited only to the import of fruits, but there are also big strategies behind it like trade balance, food variety and agricultural cooperation. If this deal goes ahead then Bangladesh’s agriculture sector can get a big export market and the income of farmers can increase.
China has given official approval to the import of fresh jackfruit from Vietnam from June 1, 2026. For this, China’s Customs Authority has set strict quality and phytosanitary rules. Exporting plantations and packing units will be required to obtain approval from both the countries. Besides, the quality, cleanliness and traceability of the fruits will have to be ensured.
Now China’s eyes turned towards Bangladesh
After Vietnam, China is now showing interest in importing jackfruit from Bangladesh also. Actually, in May 2025, China started importing raw mango from Bangladesh. At the same time, China’s ambassador to Bangladesh had expressed his desire to supply fruits like jackfruit and guava to the Chinese market. Recently, during Tariq Rehman’s visit to China, emphasis was laid on increasing trade and reducing trade deficit between the two countries. During this period, a total of 17 MoUs were signed between the two countries. In these, along with infrastructure, digital economy and disaster management, it was also agreed to promote trade of agri products.
Agriculture experts believe that if China’s huge market opens for Bangladeshi jackfruit, it will greatly benefit the country’s farmers and agriculture sector. With this, new export markets can be created not only for jackfruit but also for other agri products. This can prove to be a big opportunity to earn foreign currency for Bangladesh, which has an agriculture-based economy.
Why is China so interested in jackfruit?
The demand for healthy and natural food products is continuously increasing in China. Jackfruit is considered a fruit rich in nutrients and used in many types of food products. Apart from this, the increasing popularity of vegetarian and plant-based food has also increased the demand for jackfruit. This is the reason why China is now working on a strategy to increase the import of jackfruit from the countries of South and South-East Asia. China’s increasing interest is being seen as a big economic opportunity for Bangladesh. However, to take full advantage of this opportunity, Bangladesh will have to strengthen quality, packaging and export standards. If this happens, jackfruit can be included in the major agri export products of Bangladesh in future.
