
Political turmoil has increased after the results of West Bengal Assembly elections. Political activities are intense from Kolkata, Mumbai to Delhi. On one hand, 20 MPs of Mamata Banerjee have rebelled in Bengal, while on the other hand, 6 Lok Sabha MPs of Uddhav in Maharashtra have decided to side with Eknath Shinde. This rift between TMC and Shiv Sena (UBT) has strengthened the BJP-led alliance NDA. After the results of Lok Sabha elections in 2024, the NDA which was considered weak has become strong as of today.
How many MPs are left with the opposition?
India alliance had emerged strong in the results of 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In this, Congress had won 99 seats, Samajwadi Party 37, TMC 28, DMK 22, Shiv Sena (UBT) 9, NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) 8, RJD 4, CPM 3, JMM 3 seats.
But now after 2 years the picture has changed. The number of opposition MPs in the Lok Sabha has decreased. After the departure of 20 MPs, TMC is now left with only 8 MPs. Whereas Uddhav’s Shiv Sena is left with 3 MPs. That means the opposition has directly reduced by 26 MPs. On the other hand, after the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, the friendship between DMK and Congress has also broken.
DMK India has announced its separation from the alliance. DMK chief Stalin has changed his tone regarding Rahul Gandhi. With the separation of DMK, India Alliance’s MPs in the Lok Sabha have further reduced to 22. After the separation of 22+20+6 MPs, India Alliance is left with 188 MPs.

How far is NDA from two-third majority?
To pass a Constitution Amendment Bill, a two-thirds majority is required. The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, or the Delimitation Bill, was defeated in Parliament in April after it failed to get the required two-thirds majority to pass it. Then 298 votes were cast in favor of the bill in the Lok Sabha. Out of these, 293 votes were from NDA MPs and 5 from others.
At present, 3 out of 543 seats of Lok Sabha are vacant. These are Shillong, Naugaon and Basirhat. In such a situation, the effective strength of the House is 540 and for two-third majority the support of 360 MPs will be required. NDA currently has 293 MPs in the Lok Sabha. 20 rebel MPs of TMC have merged with NCPI. He has talked about supporting NDA. With this the number of NDA MPs will reach 313. Apart from this, 6 MPs of Uddhav group are also joining NDA, after which this figure will become 319.
Due to DMK’s defeat in Tamil Nadu elections and the subsequent decision to break ties with Congress, if 22 MPs of the party also support NDA, then this figure will increase to 341. During the voting on the Constitution Amendment Bill in April, the NDA got the support of 298 MPs, which means it got 5 additional votes. By adding this, the possible number of NDA can reach 346, which is just 14 votes less than two-thirds majority.
What does the Rajya Sabha data say?
NDA is close to two-third majority in Rajya Sabha also. There are currently 242 MPs in the Upper House. The majority figure is 122 and 164 votes are required for two-thirds majority. NDA has a total of 148 MPs. Whereas the number of MPs of India Alliance is 64. There are 28 other MPs.
