As much as Bollywood actor Aamir Khan’s films are in discussion, his personal life has also been making headlines. This time the reason is his third marriage. On the occasion of his birthday in the year 2025, Aamir had confirmed his relationship with Gauri, after which both of them got married on July 5, 2026. After his marriage with Gauri Spratt, the most asked question on social media was, after all, with what customs did Aamir Khan perform his three marriages? Did they get married as per any religious tradition or did they follow the legal procedure every time?
Interestingly, along with Reena Dutta, Kiran Rao and now Gauri Spratt, Aamir Khan chose a simple path. There were no grand religious ceremonies in all three of his marriages, rather priority was given to legally registered marriages. This is the reason that after his third marriage, the Special Marriage Act, 1954 has once again come into discussion. This is the same law, under which two adults of different religion, caste or community can marry without changing religion.
First marriage with Reena Dutta (1986)
Aamir Khan married Reena Dutta in the year 1986. At that time both their families were not in favor of this relationship. In such a situation, both of them first got registered (court) marriage. Later, when the families agreed, this relationship was accepted. This marriage took place under a legal process rather than any big religious event. At that time Aamir was starting his film career and his marriage was in the news for a long time. After being married for 16 years, both of them got divorced in 2002.
Second marriage to Kiran Rao (2005)
After divorce from Reena Dutta, Aamir Khan married filmmaker Kiran Rao on 28 December 2005. Both of them met during the film ‘Lagaan’ and their friendship gradually turned into a relationship. Aamir and Kiran also adopted a simple method and got their registered marriage done. After this, a small private ceremony was organized in the presence of family and close friends. In this marriage too, importance was given to a private event instead of a big religious function. Both of them got divorced in 2021.
Third marriage to Gauri Spratt (2026)
After almost two decades, Aamir Khan started his new life with Gauri Spratt. The wedding pictures of both are going viral on social media. Both of them got their marriage registered under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. After this, a private event was organized at Aamir Khan’s house in Mumbai in the presence of family and close friends, in which only close people were involved. In this marriage too, Aamir adopted the same method which was seen in his two previous marriages – presence of less people, simplicity and legal process.

What was the similarity in all three marriages?
If we look at all three marriages of Aamir Khan, one thing is clearly visible. Every time he kept the marriage private and simple. Instead of any big religious event or grand ceremony, they preferred a legally registered marriage. This is the reason why similar thinking is visible in his first, second and third marriages. All three wives of Aamir Khan did not change their religion for marriage.
What is Special Marriage Act?
Special Marriage Act, 1954 is a law of India, under which two adults can legally marry without changing religion. This law applies to people of different religion, caste or community as well as to people of the same religion who want to have a court marriage instead of religious customs. Under this Act, for marriage, the age of the boy should be 21 years and the age of the girl should be 18 years. Notice has to be given to the marriage officer 30 days before the marriage. If there is no legal objection, the marriage is registered in the presence of three witnesses and a marriage certificate is issued.
